Saddleback College’s dance department is preparing for the Winterdance 2013  Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. inside the McKinney Theater.

The annual dance concert will feature numerous dance styles that include ballet, tap, modern and jazz. The dances are choreographed by the Dance faculty and will be performed by Dance students

Dance instructor Dorothy Anderson Garant expressed her excitement over this year’s production.

“The students are really excited about performing,” Garant said. “The faculty are excited about presenting their work in the Winterdance 2013 concert. You are going to see a professional performance as you would see anywhere.”

The Winterdance will be the first Saddleback  dance concert for Alena Mikula, an 18-year-old kinesiology major.

“You are going to experience different kinds of cultural dances and a wide variety of different styles of dance and different ways to communicate the love for dance,” Mikula said. “It will be a fun refreshing way to view it.”

Mikula will be in a solo dance as well as a feature with two other dancers, and a larger ballet piece.

Visuals will also be a strong part of the show in terms of lighting and in clothing.

“The Lighting Designer, Tim Swiss, does a fabulous job of lighting our pieces based on what ever style is presented,” Garant said. “You will see costumes and everything will be done as professional as possible in a variety of dances.”

Garant hopes that the show not only provides entertainment to the audience, but also serve as a vehicle to introduce different styles of cultural dances to the audience.

“We try not only to present entertainment, but we try to provide some education about what is dance is about and what we can offer them here in our program curriculum.”

The show will also feature guest artists Cher Anabo and Joy Arlette.

“Cher Anabo will be doing the Japanese piece. This is not something we teach here, but here is an ethnic forum that perhaps someone else hasn’t seen before. This provides some education,” Garant said.

The Winterdance will feature the music of artists Sarah McLaughlin, Scissor Sisters, Blackmill, Lana Del Rey, Ru Paul and others.
