Billy Mintz Quartet to provide afternoon jazz
Jazz has always been a big part of music and will always have its place at Saddleback College. This afternoon in room FA103, a very special guest band, the Billy Mintz Quartet, will be performing, with the addition of Director of Jazz Studies Joey Sellers.
According to his website, Mintz was born in Queens, N.Y., where by the age 15, he was already playing in a jazz band at the Catskill Mountain resort, developing his musical skills.
Soon after Mintz relocated to Los Angeles to pursue jazz full time, and eventually meeting up with Joey Sellers. Mintz and Sellers played together in Los Angeles with Sellers’ band, Jazz Aggregation, in which the two played together for over a decade.
“I’m not familiar with his music,” said Chris Reed, 20 year-old jazz major and trumpet player, of Mintz’s music, but has taken most of the jazz classes available and is very close with Prof. Sellers.
Reed has been at Saddleback for two years now, and is currently taking Beginning Piano, Jazz Combos, Applied Music, and Jazz Lab Ensemble. Reed spoke very passionately about the beauty of jazz stating, “I love the limitlessness of jazz,” and that, “emotion can always be expressed.”
With Mintz on drums, and help of John Gross on tenor saxophone, Roberta Piket on piano, Putter Smith on bass, and Joey Sellers on trombone, the music created tonight should be masterful and tasteful.
For only $5 at the door, this concert should be a great and affordable time for any college student wanting to expand their musical repertoire.
