Saddleback Emeritus Orchestra performs Spring Concert
The Saddleback College Emeritus Institute Symphony Orchestra will perform their Spring Concert with world-renowned violinist Ellen Jung and other guests at the Geneva Presbyterian Church on Sunday, May 6.
This year’s concert will begin at 7 p.m. and also feature the voices of mezzo-soprano singer Lauren Edwards, baritone singer Ryan Thorn, and the Southern California Children’s Chorus under the direction of conductor Carol Aspling.
The program will follow lyrical themes from “Carmen,” a four-act opera by French composer Georges Bizet. Jung will begin the concert with Sarasate’s “Carmen Fantasy.” The finale will include the voices of Edwards, Thorn and the Chorus in a performance of Bizet’s Carmen Suites Nos. 1 and 2.
Jung is member of the award-winning chamber music ensemble Jung Trio and has performed throughout North America, Russia, South Korea, Kenya and Mauritius, according to her biography on the trio’s website.
Edwards, who earned her master’s degree in music from UCLA, is the alto soloist and section leader at Westwood Presbyterian Church, according to her biography on the Laguna Woods Village Symphony website.
Thorn, is completing his master’s degree in voice performance at UCLA, was a featured soloist with the Madison Symphony Chorus and has performed the roles of Morales and El Dancairo in their production of “Carmen.”
Aspling and the SCCC were invited to perform at the 84th Academy Awards in February.
A preview of the orchestra’s performance, along with an appearance by Jung, will be held at the Soka University campus during its 11th Annual International Festival on Saturday, May 5. The festival will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with free admission.
The Geneva Presbyterian Church is located at 24301 El Toro Road, Laguna Hills.
Suggested admission for the event is $5, but admission will not be denied for inability to pay.
